New York, New York?!

So, up until now I've been very careful to keep this blog as anonymous as possible. I mean, I'm sure family and friends could probably figure it out if they tried hard but in general I talk very little about my life. Now that I'm the P word, I find it's hard to come up with blog topics that aren't related to what I'm currently experiencing. Quite frankly, I don't want to spend all my time regaling you with tales of weight gain and gas. So, I'm going to slowly start talking a bit more about my life outside of IF. Hence, the blog title.

So, New York what does this have to do with anything? Well, we very likely may be moving there. Said moving would occur 3 weeks after my due date. Can you say eek! Added to this, we currently live about the farthest geographic distance away from New York possible while still being in the US. Can you guess where I live? I am so excited and nervous and multiple emotions. If anyone lives there/has lived there and has suggestions for where to look for housing or neighborhoods, I'm all ears. My husband will be attending school in Manhattan and I will need to find a job. We are seriously considering living outside the city in order to have a bit more room and save some money. Big changes are a coming.

  1. Hawaii? You have a long way to go, wherever you are. And with a newborn no less!

I don't envy you. Prices in NY and it's suburbs are VERY high. And you really have to know the neighborhoods so you don't end up somewhere where you reeeeeally don't want to be living. Your best bet is to hire a real estate agent as soon as you know that you will be moving there for certain. An agent who knows the city will be able to help you find what you're looking for, and their fee is usually paid for by the seller/renter of the property.

I live on the other side of CT, about as far away from NY that you can be in CT...which is fine by me. But, I'm close enough to visit you if/when you move here :)

    1. Correct. I'm not sure if I envy me either...though it's not much more expensive then where we currently live.

  2. Alaska? Moving to NYC is intimidating under any circumstances. I've lived in NY for a little over 10 years. and I LOVE it, but it's a big adjustment coming from really anywhere else. I'd recommend considering brooklyn or queens. in brooklyn, cobble hill, carrol gardens, or park slopes are great neighborhoods where you'll find lots of strollers per capita and lots of baby friendly cafes and shops. in manhattan, murray hill is more reasonable pricewise, or some parts of the upper east side. for any of these locations, the easiest way to find a rental is to use a broker. it stinks to pay a fee to rent, but it will make things much simpler and quicker. i'm happy to be of any other help i can be - I know that NYC is a scary place to move to. (it has a lot of charms, tho, too!!!) welcome!

    1. I missed the "about" in my first post so just edited. Otherwise, you would have been correct. I may ask you some questions when we get a bit farther in our search. We've also been considering Brooklyn. I need to research this "fee" thing a bit more.

    2. please DO feel fee to contact me with questions as the date comes closer. seriously happy to be a resource in any way that i can. i remember how overwhelming i found it when i moved here from across the country. but it's doable. and it can be a great place to live and raise kids and go to school, etc.

  3. I've heard that Hawaii is pricey. If I had to move to Hawaii I wouldn't know the first place to look!

  4. Brooklyn and Queens are good options, also way up on the Upper West Side. Sadly, the fee thing is par for the course. Which hurts when you have to pass over the check. But unless you hear of a place by word of mouth, it's usually the way you find a place.

  5. I lived in and loved NYC for years but in all honesty all my friends who are still there are being forced out of their apartments because prices are just skyrocketing! The ones with kids are going to end up in Brooklyn because they can't afford to stay in their apt when rent gets raised again (which it does every year) If we moved back I know there is no way we would be able to live in the West Village anymore, prices have just gone up too much in the last 2 years since we were there. It might be easier with a baby to be out of the city like others have suggested, Brooklyn I would suggest over Queens. But OMG coming from Hawaii???? You guys are in for quite a shock and a complete change in the way you live!!!
